Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By T. Morris,

T"prospects of passenget traffic by road have their clouds, but they also have their silver linings.

The clouds are the attempts being made to liamper the coaching industry, particularly in the London area, by the authorities who are straining every nerve to make rail travel more attractive. To what an extent they will be successful remains to be seen. Personally, I do not think that established booking agents need worry overmuch, in which case operators will have nothing to complain about. While on this subject, however, I want to make it perfectly clear that if the clouds are to be dispersed this can only be achieved by a united front being shown both by agents and operators; otherwise, we shall be snowed under with regulations and legislation aiming at railway monopoly. For this purpose both parties should join their respective associations—the Motor Hirers' Association on the one hand and the Booking Agents' Association on the other. And both associations must work together. Now for the silver lining. As an agent my recent experience has been that the public is keener than ever on road travel. More inquiries for Easter and summer travel are coming into the office than happened a year ago. This is an excellent sign, as showing a healthy demand. The supply to meet the demand will also be greater than ever, judging by operators' additions to their fleet, to the creation of new services and the opening of new routes. That, at any rate, is the information which reaches us. Coupled with new coaches are their improvements in comfort and luxury—all of which stimulate the demand.

In conclusion, provided the sun shines through the clouds; provided seats are easily obtainable during the busy season ; and that responsible operators and agents work in unison to help each other, the 1931 season, as well as the future of the coaching industry, are assured, however adamant be Whitehall.
