The justification of British trade enterprise is now becoming apparent. Practically a year ago, Germany threw up the sponge, and decided that the cost of an annual motor display wits too great ; now, the French announce that they, too, have had enough. Overtures are being made to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on the basis of alternative shows, and hopes are eventually cherished that there will be a cave on this side of the Channel. We have witnessed the growth of the S.M.M.T. from the early days of t902, when a few men broke away front the existing organisation, on the ground that any National Show should be run " by the Trade for the Trade." Less than seven years have elapsed since that decision was taken, and a great vicory for the British motor industry is about to he realised as one outstanding result. With its ample resources, the S.NLNLT. is in a position to make the British shows,
both for private and commercial vehicles, the markets of the world, and to tide its supporters over a period of stress which has already left its mark upon competitive nations. We are glad to know that there is no call for us to set down arguments in favour of the policy of the preservation of an unbroken sequence of British exhibitions, but we do, none the less, put on record our high esteem of the foresight and management which has, in so short a time, forged a weapon of so great effectiveness.
