MR. ANDREW DUNCAN has been elected chairman of the Scottish Carriers' and Haulage Contractors' Association for another year. A new member of the Board, MR. JAMES FERGUSON, of Messrs.' E. Ferguson, South Harbour Street, Ayr, an old-established firm, has been elected vice-chairman.

Army, and his place, for the duration of the war,. has been taken by MR. ROBERT T. PROCTOR, A.C.I.S., 220, Union Street, Aberdeen. Mr. Hamish MacDougall, secretary of the Association. attended the meeting of the. Aberdeenshire Committee when this appointment was confirmed.

rlleybuses), and MR, H. S. MAY, perintendent of rolling stock (trams and trolleybuses), have retired from the London Passenger Transport Board, after many years of service. MR. J. LUNN and MR. B. SMITHIN have been 'appointed officers of the Board, Mr. Lunn with the title of assistantworks engineer (Charlton) and Mr. Smithin with the,title of engineering superintendent (trams and trolleybuses).
U.S. RAILWAYS' INCREASED USE OF ROAD TRANSPORT
RAILWAYS in the United States are extending their use of road motors for the movement of goods, reports the American Inter-State Commerce Commission.
Vehicles that are owned and operated on the public highways by and for the railways now exceed in number the total of locomotives in the country. Of the total tonnage of less-than-car-load consignments of the western railways, eight per cent, was carried by road during the first quarter of 1940, and over 41per cent, of less-than-car-load deliveries of the eastern railways was moved in railway-operated road vehicles during the same period. These figures refer to traffic credited only directly to the railways and not to that which is received by separate roadtransport operators which are railcontrolled. ANEW Order requires the registration of all dealers in used machine tools, and it will be necessary-for them to keep a 'register of their dealings. On and after August 17, dealings will rot be permitted except under a licence horn the Ministry of Supply. Sales will then be restricted to Government Eepartments and users who can obtain special permits.
